I’ve seen it too many times on site: a gate valve or butterfly valve is installed “tight” between two flanges,
rigidly bolted in place, and everything looks perfect… until maintenance day. When the intervention starts, it turns into a nightmare:
there’s no clearance to move the valve, you can’t extract it from the spool, and the crew loses time improvising:
partial disassembly, cutting, jacking and unplanned maneuvers that were never part of the schedule or the safety plan.
This mistake is expensive because it destroys maintainability. In water infrastructure, every extra hour means assets offline,
crews waiting, and avoidable risk during what should be a standard replacement task.
What is a self-restrained dismantling joint?
A Dismantling Joint is a flanged component designed to provide what the installation typically lacks: controlled clearance.
Its key feature is the telescopic adjustment (typically ±25 mm), which allows you to “shorten” the assembly,
create the space needed, remove/insert the valve, and re-tighten without forcing the pipeline.
In the self-restrained version, the assembly remains stable and handles loads without improvised restraints. You get a clean installation today
and a safe removal tomorrow.
Direct benefits for site work and maintenance
- Faster future maintenance: real man-hour savings by removing the valve without dismantling large sections of pipe.
- Absorbs vibration and small misalignment: helps the joint work more reliably without transmitting unnecessary loads.
- Protects the valve from mechanical stress: reduces parasitic loads from settlement, tolerances and forced installation.
FM Pipefitting standard specification (reference)
| Body | GGG50 Ductile Iron |
| Bolting | Zinc-plated steel or Stainless (per request) |
| Gasket | EPDM (potable water) or NBR (hydrocarbons) |
| Coating | Epoxy Blue RAL 5015 (FBE) |
Site note: telescopic adjustment is not “nice to have” — it’s maintainability insurance. If valves sit in chambers, stations or bypasses,
specify it from day one.
